NTN verification

NTN Verification Online in Pakistan: Complete FBR Guide

Verify an NTN through FBR IRIS, understand the result, check ATL status separately, and avoid common verification mistakes.

Verify an NTN through FBR IRIS, understand the result, check ATL status separately, and avoid common verification mistakes.

What NTN verification actually confirms

An online NTN check confirms that the registration number is associated with a taxpayer profile in FBR's system. It can help you compare the registered name and available profile details before onboarding a supplier, issuing tax documents or updating a customer master. It does not, by itself, prove that the person has filed the latest return, appears on the Active Taxpayer List (ATL), is registered for sales tax, or is authorised to collect sales tax. Treat those as separate checks.

Before you start: choose the correct identifier

For a Pakistani individual, FBR states that the 13-digit CNIC is used as the NTN or registration number. A company or association of persons (AOP) receives a 7-digit NTN after e-enrollment. Keep the legal name and identifier exactly as provided; removing digits, using a director's personal CNIC for a company, or confusing an SECP incorporation number with an FBR NTN can produce the wrong result.

Step-by-step NTN verification on FBR IRIS

Open the official FBR IRIS portal directly and select Taxpayer Profile Inquiry under Online Verifications. Choose the available identifier type that matches the taxpayer, enter the registration number and complete the captcha. Submit the inquiry, then compare the displayed legal name and other available registration particulars with the document or record you are checking. Save a dated PDF or screenshot only if your internal controls require evidence, and protect personal information in that file.

How to check Active Taxpayer List status

Return to Online Verifications and choose Active Taxpayer List (Income Tax). Select NTN, CNIC, passport number or registration/incorporation number as appropriate, enter the requested date and captcha, and verify. The ATL result answers a different question from Taxpayer Profile Inquiry: it indicates active-list status for the period shown. A taxpayer profile may exist even when ATL status is inactive, so record both the result and the date checked.

NTN verification versus sales tax verification

Income-tax registration does not automatically establish sales-tax registration. If a seller claims sales-tax registration or charges sales tax, use the separate Active Taxpayer List (Sales Tax) or other applicable FBR verification service and compare the seller name and registration number with the invoice. For supplier due diligence, keep income-tax, ATL and sales-tax checks in separate fields instead of reducing them to a single yes/no label.

What to do when no record or a mismatch appears

First recheck the identifier type, digit count and spelling. Ask the taxpayer for a current registration document rather than guessing. If the legal name differs, stop automated onboarding until the discrepancy is explained. The taxpayer may need to correct registration particulars through IRIS, recover an account, or contact FBR. Never accept an edited screenshot, unofficial lookup site or search-engine snippet as the final source.

A practical verification record for businesses

Your supplier or customer file should record the identifier checked, check type, result, legal name returned, date, reviewer and source URL. Recheck status at a frequency proportionate to risk and before relying on sales-tax treatment. Restrict access because CNIC and tax-profile information is personal data. Frequently asked questions

Can I verify an NTN by company name alone? Use the identifier-based official inquiry for a reliable match; a name search can produce similar entities. Does a valid NTN mean the taxpayer is a filer? No. Check ATL separately. Is CNIC the NTN for an individual? FBR's registration basics say the 13-digit CNIC serves as the registration number for an individual. Can I use a third-party verification site? Use FBR as the authoritative result and avoid entering sensitive data into unknown websites.
