Who needs an NTN or FBR registration number?

Anyone who must file an income-tax return or complete a transaction that requires tax registration may need to register with FBR. The exact obligation depends on income, legal form and activity, so obtain professional advice where necessary. FBR describes an individual, company, AOP or foreign national as registered when e-enrolled in IRIS. For an individual the CNIC becomes the registration number; a company or AOP receives a 7-digit NTN.

Documents and information for an individual

Prepare your CNIC or NICOP, a mobile number in your own name, an active personal email address, nationality, residential address and accounting period. Add the business name, business address and principal business activity if you earn business income; employer name and NTN for salary income; or property address for property income. FBR's published registration process also lists a personal bank-account maintenance certificate and, for a business, evidence of tenancy or ownership plus a recent paid utility bill.

Step 1: create and verify your IRIS account

Go directly to the official IRIS portal and start the registration flow for an unregistered person. Enter your identity and contact information exactly as held by the relevant official records. Complete the mobile and email one-time-password checks and create secure login credentials. The current FBR Registration 2.0 manual describes NADRA identity validation and real-time verification of whether the mobile number is registered against the taxpayer's CNIC.

Step 2: complete the registration application

Sign in with the credentials issued or created during enrollment. Complete the registration application shown by IRIS, supplying the residential, business, activity, bank and other applicable information. Upload clear PDF evidence where requested. Review every address, activity and contact field before submission; these details flow into your taxpayer profile and errors can affect notices, withholding documentation and later registration changes.

Step 3: submit and confirm completion

Submit the application and check the completed tasks, orders or registration-profile area for the outcome. Do not assume that receiving a password alone finishes registration: older FBR guidance explicitly distinguishes initial credentials from submission of the registration form. Download the available registration evidence, sign out, and confirm the result through Taxpayer Profile Inquiry. Our NTN verification guide explains that final check.

Sole proprietor, salaried person and freelancer differences

A sole proprietor is not a separate company merely because a business name is used; the individual's CNIC remains the FBR registration number, with business particulars added to the profile. A salaried person should enter employer details when applicable. A freelancer should select an accurate principal activity and maintain evidence of business address and banking arrangements. Tax treatment can differ by facts, so do not copy another applicant's activity or accounting period blindly.

How companies and AOPs obtain an NTN

FBR's public requirements ask a principal officer of a company or AOP for entity, business, contact, activity, registration and stakeholder information. The published counter process lists the incorporation certificate and directors' CNICs for a company, or partnership deed and relevant registration certificate for an AOP, along with authority, bank-account and premises evidence. A newly incorporated SECP company can use the one-window route: SECP's guide says incorporation data is forwarded to FBR and FBR credentials are sent to the chief executive. See the complete SECP company-registration process.

After registration: NTN is not the end of compliance

Confirm your taxpayer profile, protect account credentials and keep email, mobile, address, bank and business particulars current. Determine which return and statement obligations apply and their due dates. Registration alone does not place a person on the ATL forever; ATL status depends on the applicable filing rules and period. Income-tax registration also does not automatically mean sales-tax registration.

Common NTN application mistakes

The most frequent avoidable problems are using a mobile number not registered to the applicant, entering a shared or inaccessible email address, uploading unreadable evidence, choosing an inaccurate business activity, mixing residential and business addresses, or leaving the registration application incomplete after receiving credentials. Use only the official portal, never share passwords or OTPs with an unverified agent, and use FBR's official help channels if the identity or mobile checks fail.
