Registered vs Unregistered Buyer Details on an FBR Digital Invoice
A practical guide to buyer registration type, NTN/CNIC, name, province and address without treating validation shortcuts as legal advice.
A practical guide to buyer registration type, NTN/CNIC, name, province and address without treating validation shortcuts as legal advice.
Why buyer status matters
Buyer registration type affects the data expected on an invoice and may interact with the tax treatment. The official API model includes buyer NTN/CNIC, business name, province, address and a registered or unregistered classification. Do not select a status merely because it makes a test payload pass; preserve evidence supporting the status used at the time of supply.
Registered buyers
For a registered buyer, use the identifier and legal details that belong to that registration. Validate the format before submission and avoid copying values from an old invoice without checking the current customer master. A correct-looking number belonging to another entity creates a reconciliation and audit problem even if basic format validation succeeds.
Unregistered buyers are not one simple case
Requirements can depend on the seller, buyer and transaction. FBR's FAQ states that supplies by a manufacturer or importer to an unregistered distributor should contain the NIC or NTN of that distributor. Consumer, distributor and other unregistered-buyer cases should therefore be mapped separately with qualified advice.
Build safe customer-master controls
Store the identifier, registration type, legal name, province, address, source of verification, verification date and reviewer. Restrict edits to authorised users. If an identifier changes, preserve history rather than silently rewriting old invoices. Flag missing or inconsistent details before invoice submission.
Resolve validation errors methodically
API errors may say the buyer number is invalid, missing or in the wrong format, or that buyer name or registration type is required. Check the source record first; do not insert dummy values. Confirm whether the issue is formatting, master data, an incorrect buyer status or a transaction-specific requirement.
