Correcting an Electronic Sales Tax Invoice in Pakistan

A control-focused guide to invoice mistakes, credit and debit notes, the current 72-hour direction and correction evidence.

Invoice correction is not the same as editing a draft. Once an electronic sales tax invoice has been validly generated, the business needs a controlled process that respects the current legal mechanism, preserves the original evidence and prevents unauthorised changes.

Stop and classify the issue

Determine whether the problem is a draft-data mistake, rejected submission, accepted invoice with a bona fide error, cancelled supply, returned goods, change in value or another event. The correct response depends on status and substance.

Do not overwrite the source record before preserving what was approved and submitted. Record who identified the issue, when it was found and which fields or values are affected.

Understand the current direction

FBR’s Sales Tax General Order No. 01 of 2026, dated 30 March 2026, states that an integrated person may cancel, delete or edit a valid electronic sales tax invoice generated due to a bona fide mistake through the Board’s system within 72 hours of generation. After 72 hours, prior approval of the concerned Commissioner Inland Revenue is required in the manner and subject to conditions specified by the Board.

This is a time-sensitive legal and operational rule. Read the official STGO 01 of 2026 and check for later amendments before acting.

Consider credit or debit notes

FBR’s digital invoicing FAQs refer to section 9 of the Sales Tax Act, 1990 for situations such as cancellation of supply, return of goods, or changes in the nature or value of supply, subject to applicable conditions and limitations. A credit or debit note is not a casual workaround; it should reflect the actual commercial event and current legal requirements.

Obtain tax advice when the appropriate treatment is unclear, especially when a return period, buyer record or tax amount is affected.

Use role-based correction controls

Separate request, review and execution for material changes. Require a reason code and explanatory note. Restrict access to authorised users and record before-and-after values, timestamps, external responses and approvals.

Prevent the corrected invoice from silently replacing the original in reports. Both records and their relationship should remain traceable.

Reconcile the downstream systems

A correction may need to flow to ERP, accounting, inventory, customer statements and tax reporting. Update each system through an approved process and verify totals. Notify the customer using the appropriate document where required.

Maintain an exception report for corrections awaiting action, approaching a time limit, requiring approval or not yet reconciled.

Practical correction checklist

  • Confirm whether the invoice is draft, rejected or valid
  • Preserve original request and response evidence
  • Identify the genuine commercial reason
  • Check the current official rule and time limit
  • Obtain required internal and external approval
  • Execute through the authorised channel
  • Retain the linked correction record
  • Reconcile accounting, inventory and customer records
