Understand the 30 March 2026 FBR order on bona fide invoice mistakes, the seventy-two-hour window and controls needed before making a correction.

What the 2026 order says

Sales Tax General Order 01 of 2026, dated 30 March 2026, states that an integrated person may cancel, delete or edit a valid electronic sales tax invoice generated due to a bona fide mistake through FBR's computerized system within seventy-two hours of generation. After that period, the order makes the action subject to prior approval of the concerned Commissioner Inland Revenue under the specified process and conditions.

Do not confuse mistakes with commercial adjustments

A typing or mapping mistake is different from returned goods, cancelled supply or a later change in value. FBR's FAQ points to debit or credit notes under section 9 for relevant cancellations, returns or changes. Ask a qualified adviser which route applies; software should not silently turn every correction into an edit.

Capture a correction request

Require the original internal and FBR invoice references, generation time, reason, fields affected, evidence, requester and approver. Calculate the deadline from the recorded generation timestamp rather than a user's memory. Block changes to unrelated fields and preserve the before-and-after record.

Design permissions and audit logs

Only authorised roles should request or approve cancellation, deletion or editing. Store timestamps, user identity, reason, submitted action and response. Never erase the original audit trail from your own system even when an external correction is accepted.

Build an after-72-hours escalation

When the window has expired, stop normal self-service editing and route the case for tax review and the applicable approval process. Show staff that the invoice is under review, prevent duplicate replacement invoices and retain all correspondence and decisions with the original record.
